NEW INITIATIVE TO FACILITATE TRAVEL ON RECENTLY EXPIRED IRP CARD

Minister Brophy has issued a Travel Confirmation Notice allowing individuals who have applied to renew their recently expired IRP cards to travel internationally during the summer period. This is due to a backlog in the processing of applications for renewal, with many categories pending for a period of 17-weeks.

It is important to note that an application must be made to renew one’s current permission in advance of the expiry date of their IRP card. Once this has been completed, Non-EEA Nationals can travel on their recently expired IRP card. Those availing of this initiative must produce a copy of the Travel Confirmation Notice, their expired IRP card and proof of renewal application to the immigration authorities and the airline.

The Department will update airlines and foreign missions of the initiative, but it is encouraged to contact your airline to ensure that they recognise the notice. Those traveling through a third country on their return to Ireland are also encouraged to check if the travel notice will be permissible in that jurisdiction prior to booking their tickets.

This Travel Confirmation Notice will only be valid from 13th July 2026 to 31st August 2026.

INTERIM NOTICE TO EMPLOYERS REGARDING RENEWAL OF REGISTRATION

Due to ongoing delays in the Department of Justice registration process, Minister Brophy has announced that those unable to obtain a valid IRP card prior to the expiry of the same are entitled to remain in the State on the basis of their current permission up until the 31st of August 2026. This is subject to the adherence to certain conditions.

The applicant can have either a valid in-date employment permit or hold a permission which does not require access to work. Additionally, the employee must be capable of providing proof of their application for renewal prior to the expiry of their permission and that all relevant documents were provided with this application.

Once the application for renewal has been approved on the online portal, employees will receive an email verifying the same which will act as proof of registration pending the delivery of the IRP card.

Applicants can check the status of their application as well as submit queries on the Immigration Service’s Customer Service Portal (available at https://portal.irishimmigration.ie/en/)
